Course description

Finally - A Class Where Details Are Welcome!

You’ve probably heard art teachers and mentors telling their students to avoid committing to details too soon -”general to specific”...and often in critiques you’ve probably been told that you got too caught up in the details or that your details are grabbing too much attention away from your focal point. Well - in this class we are going to focus on the details. Being able to understand the structure of different textures will help you create more convincing focal points in your work. Going through the exercises in this class will help you become a better painter in edge control, light and shadow, form, and color predictions.

This is an advanced painting observation class that can be executed in either traditional or digital paint. You will be able to download a template to either print and paint on or work digitally in a program like Photoshop or on a tablet like iPad.

In this class you will learn:

  • Basic repeating structures found in most textures

  • How to draw and paint each simple structure

  • How to control and paint various edges

  • How to make basic color predictions

  • How to examine various textures and identify key features

  • How to paint textures and details

Use our template to explore our suggested textures list or choose your own.

Interactive Class:

You will have access to lots of different videos to watch explaining the various concepts in the class along with demo videos to clarify the exercises.

In this class, you will be invited to complete 2 assignments during the weeks the class is running. You will need to upload your assignment images on time to our svslearn.com site for critique. Once we have your work, Will Terry will review it and critique it via drawover in Photoshop with a screen recording video with commentary. He will combine all critiques into one video for each review session and upload to svslearn.com where you will be able to watch all critiques to learn from not only your session but the other classmates reviews as well. These reviews will only be available to fellow classmates. You will also be able to ask questions pertaining to the classwork in an "office hours" LIVE GoToMeeting session with anyone who wants to join from your class. If you cannot make the LIVE session, you can send in questions to Will ahead of time and he will answer them in that LIVE session. All class members will have access to watch the video from the live session when they access the class from their account.

Begins Monday Feb 19th 2018

Beginning on the 19th the class materials will be released each consecutive Monday. All homework assignments must be turned in by  March 10th to give Will Terry time to critique your work.

Self Directed Class:

If you take the self directed version of this class you will be given the same class materials and assignments from the interactive class, however you will not receive feedback or be able to ask questions. But you can still complete the assignments for your personal improvement and seek feedback in our SVS forums.
